Best Reads of 2018

The end of 2018 has come and gone and it’s again time to look back on the year and list the best book I read. A lot happened in 2018! I moved back to the UK after two years in Australia and started the last year of my PhD. I was able to spend the Holidays at home again for the first time in three year. I’m starting up my own little homemade business and I’m moving in to a flat by myself. So many exciting events and so many promising things for the future.

What seems to be a theme since I started my PhD, is that I haven’t had a lot of time to read again last year. My only New Year’s resolution (again) is to read more and blog more. I made a bit more headway in the blogging department in 2018 when I relaunched under a new name and on a new website. I’d been wanting to do that for a long time and I’m so happy I was able to do it all last year.

So what were the books I rated five stars in 2018? Let’s have a look.

Valour – John Gwynne

The second book in the Faithful and the Fallen series! I’m completely in love with this series, so it’s no surprise I rated this book five stars. The first book Malice was already great, but Valour took it to the next level. I’m currently reading the third book, Ruin, and absolutely loving it too. If you haven’t read these books yet, you should totally pick them up!

Kings of the Wyld – Nicholas Eames

What. A. Debut! Certainly one of the most original and fun debuts I’ve read in a long time. It just sucks you in and gets you invested in all the characters and their lives. Full of action and humour it has a bit of everything to please readers of different genres. The story continues in Bloody Rose, the second book of The Band!

Grey Sister – Mark Lawrence

Well, me having a Mark Lawrence book in my ‘best of’ lists isn’t anything new and is probably starting to become a theme. After the absolutely amazing Red Sister in 2017, its sequel has now made it into the top books I’ve read in 2018. Sequels are tricky, especially if the first book has been a fan favourite. But I never doubted that Mark would pull it off. I can’t wait to read Holy Sister!

Foundryside – Robert Jackson Bennett

Another author that has been mentioned more than once in my ‘best of’ lists at the end of the year. This time with a completely new story. Foundryside had a bit of hype and frequent readers of my blog will know that this always scares me. Foundryside was a stunning book though, it ticked all the boxes for me! I definitely recommend you picking it up if you haven’t yet.
