    Update: January

The first month of the new year has already come to an end in what has been a whirlwind 4 short weeks. I think I don’t have to tell you how this month has felt. For a lot of us it feels like the world has started to crash and burn around us. The one main thing that has warmed my heart though is the thousands of people coming together and supporting each other. For all the heartwrenching, scary stuff that’s happening, at least that is a little light in the darkness.   I vowed to read one book a week this year, adding up to 52 books in 2017.…

    My 2016 in Books

Unfortunately I didn’t reach my goal of reading 60 books this year. Again! With about 10 days left and another 2 books that are almost finished, I’ll have read 38 books. Which is a bit disappointing. I definitely wish I had had more time to read this year. New Year’s resolution: finally stick to my Reading Challenge in 2017! Nonetheless, I’ve read some amazing books this year that will end up on my favourites shelf.   Favourite books of 2016 City of Blades – Robert Jackson Bennett I figured it would be hard to beat the success of the first book, City of Stairs, but boy was I wrong. City…

Update: I Moved To The Other Side Of The World

That’s right! I have now been living in Australia for a week. It still feels a bit surreal and I can’t figure out yet how I feel about it. You may have noticed that the last few months no new reviews or other book-related posts have gone up on the blog. Though I’ve still been reading a lot, I felt I needed to focus on my studies and my friends and family a bit more. In October of 2015 I moved to the UK to start my PhD there and since then my life has been a whirlwind of new experiences. I met an amazing group of friends in Nottingham…

    Update: May

I can’t believe this is the last day of May already… For me, that has brought so many things closer than I thought they were. I’m leaving for Australia in 4 months. 4 months. It feels like I only arrived in the UK just yesterday. The Quidditch World Cup, where I’ll be a referee, will happen in less than 2 months. I will finish my first PhD year in 4 months. Can you slow down a bit now, time? It’s getting a bit scary. Book-wise things are going pretty great though. I’ve read quite a fair amount of books this month, for me at least. I’ve bought a lot of…

    Update: April

It’s been a while since I’ve done an update post, but I thought it was time to start again. I’ve read some great books in the first four months of this year and I have a feeling there will be many more during the rest of the year. These first 4 months have been… strange. 2016 has so far been a strange mix of wonderful and devastating events. Good thing I have my books through all of it. These last few weeks have been crazy as I started the most important experiments of my first PhD year. It all happened a bit early and rather unexpected, so I’ve been running…

New Books in 2016 – Part IV – Angry Robot & Pyr

PYR Not a long list from Pyr, but two books I’m very much looking forward to reading! I mean, look at the pretty covers, who wouldn’t want those on their bookshelves? Not only that, but they sound very interesting as well.   Black City Saint – Richard A. Knaak (01/03) For more than sixteen hundred years, Nick Medea has followed and guarded the Gate that keeps the mortal realm and that of Feirie separate, seeking in vain absolution for the fatal errors he made when he slew the dragon. All that while, he has tried and failed to keep the woman he loves from dying over and over. Yet in…

New Books in 2016 – Part III – Gollancz

Occupy Me – Tricia Sullivan (21/01) A woman with wings that exist in another dimension. A man trapped in his own body by a killer. A briefcase that is a door to hell. A conspiracy that reaches beyond our world. Breathtaking SF from a Clarke Award-winning author. Tricia Sullivan has written an extraordinary, genre defining novel that begins with the mystery of a woman who barely knows herself and ends with a discovery that transcends space and time. On the way we follow our heroine as she attempts to track down a killer in the body of another man, and the man who has been taken over, his will trapped…

New Books in 2016 – Part II – Tor (2)

Ready for the second part of the Tor (US & UK) catalogue? Which ones are you looking forward to?   Company Town – Madeline Ashby (17/05) Meet Hwa. One of the few in her community to forego bio-engineered enhancements, she’s the last truly organic person left on the rig. But she’s an expert in the arts of self-defence, and she’s been charged with training the Family’s youngest, who has been receiving death threats – seemingly from another timeline. Meanwhile, a series of interconnected murders threatens the city’s stability – serial killer? Or something much, much worse…?           Infomocracy – Malka Older (07/06) It’s been twenty years…

    New Books in 2016 – Part I – Tor (1)

It’s that time of the year again! Yes, the Christmas trees, the ridiculous amounts of food, the carols, the fireworks, the presents, the melancholia… But also looking ahead to the new year in books! This is always one of the most exciting times of the year for me, because I love to browse through the publishers’ catalogues and discover what the new year will bring. One of the first catalogues I went through was the one from Tor. It’s quite an impressive catalogue with a massive amount of interesting books. I can’t wait to get my hands on all of these! Have a look below at the first part of the…

    Update: October & November

Finally, some time to do another Update post! I have now officially moved to the UK, at least, for the next 9 months. After that I’m packing up again and moving to Australia for 2 years. My life has never been this crazy before, but I’m loving all the excitement and all the amazing opportunities I’m getting here. Reading has been going a bit slow because of that. I’ve started listening to audiobooks on the bus or while I’m doing routine work, so I don’t have to miss it too much.   Read and Currently Reading Read: ‘Divergent’, ‘Insurgent’ and ‘Allegiant’ by Veronica Roth: I finally watched the Divergent and…
