Top Ten Tuesday: Authors I’d Love to Meet

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. The topic today is “Authors I’d Love to Meet”. I’ve been very lucky in the past to have met some of my favourite authors already at World Fantasy Convention in 2013 and World Science-Fiction Convention in 2014. So I thought I’d split this up between the ones I’ve already met and the ones I’d love to meet in the future! Warning: there are some pictures of young me incoming…

Favourite authors I have met:

Patrick Rothfuss

I met Patrick on two occasions. The first time at World Fantasy Convention and the second time, while wearing our Adem cosplay at World Science Fiction convention. Both of these times were definitely memorable. Patrick is an absolutely lovely human being and was very generous.

Robin Hobb

I have to admit I was a bit starstruck when I first met her. She signed one of my books at the mass signing during the World Fantasy Convention and even took the time to take a picture with me afterwards in a very busy corridor. She’s very nice and funny!

George R.R. Martin

Even though it was only a brief encounter, I won’t forget this one easily. This was at the height of the Game of Thrones craze and as a big fan of the books I was left speechless when next to him. No pictures of this one as I was busy taking pictures for my friends!

Sarah Pinborough

Sharing wine and face paint is definitely how you want to meet and spend some time with one of your favourite authors. I had so much fun!

Brandon Sanderson

When I started my first year PhD at the University of Nottingham, I found out that Fantasycon that year would be held at University Park right here in Nottingham. As it was right on my doorstep, I obviously went over and got my book signed by Brandon Sanderson. He even let me record a little video for a Belgian friend who is a big fan of him! So lovely!

Favourite authors I’d like to meet:

V.E. Schwab

I’m such a big fan of her books and I’d just really like to meet her in person. She seems like an amazing person and it’s always great to see the people who have created the very thing that has brought you joy.

Mark Lawrence

Mark is always so involved with his fans and he seems like a very interesting person to have a conversation with. He doesn’t make a lot of appearances, so maybe I’ll have to make my way down South one day for a Grim Gathering if that is on again.

J.K Rowling

I mean, she’s the one who gave us Harry Potter. I grew up with her HP books and almost 5 years ago I started playing quidditch. Both the book and the sports have been a big part of my life and I can’t imagine having a life without them. So of course I’d like to meet the woman who made this all possible.

Raymond E. Feist

Magician was one of the first books that really made me fall completely head over heels in love with Fantasy. When I got a signed, numbered edition of Magician’s End, I cried. I’d give a lot to meet the man behind the Riftwar Cycle!

I’m sure there’s many more that just don’t come to mind right now!
