Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren’t My Typical Genre
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and The Bookish. Every Tuesday bloggers list 10 bookish things according to a certain theme. Today we’re talking about books that we enjoyed recently that were out of our comfort zone. This is a really difficult one for me because I primarily read Fantasy or SciFi, so I doubt I’ll get to ten books. Let’s see how far we get.
1. The Girl on The Train – Paula Hawkins
I bought The Girl on The Train after reading so many good things about it. I usually don’t read psychological thrillers, but when I do, I’m easily hooked. This one wasn’t any different. I read the book in a day, curious to find out what exactly had happened. Even though I figured out the plot twist that was revealed at the end, I still really enjoyed reading about the main character putting it all together. This was ideal reading material for a cold winter day during my Christmas break and it has lead me to buy similar books. We’ll see how I enjoy those.
2. Ross Poldark – Winston Graham
I haven’t seen the TV-series ‘Poldark’ yet, but the people I follow on Twitter were really enthusiastic about it. When there are books involved I usually try to read those first before I watch any movies or series. So I bought Ross Poldark, the first book in the Poldark Saga. I am a fan of historical fiction, but I just don’t get around to reading it a lot. I really enjoyed my little break from Fantasy and SciFi with this one. It’s captivating, moving and quite exciting at times.
3. The Unquiet House – Alison Littlewood
Horror is another one of those genres that I love to read, but don’t get to often. I got a review copy of Alison Littlewood’s The Unquiet House from Jo Fletcher Books and thought it was the perfect opportunity to read another horror book. I really enjoyed this one. It is this creepy, haunting kind of horror with a surprising end that leaves you with goosebumps.
4. 13 Minutes – Sarah Pinborough
My review for this book should be going up on the blog pretty soon. I requested this book on NetGalley because I’m a huge fan of Sarah Pinborough’s work. As I expected, this book was great. Sarah’s writing is so captivating, I just couldn’t stop reading. I read through the night to finish it. You could define it as another psychological thriller, but this one really kept me guessing about what was going on.
5. The Builders – Daniel Polansky
I am not a fan of novellas and I can’t remember the last time I read a book where all characters are talking animals. I decided to give this one a try though because people seemed to really enjoy it. It was a fast and entertaining read an I’m really glad I gave it a chance.
6. Touch – Claire North
‘Touch’ was a very special book. It’s not like anything I’ve ever read, which made it an incredibly fascinating read. I was intrigued by the concept and couldn’t put it down. Not a book I’d usually read, but one I enjoyed very, very much.
7. My Life Next Door – Huntley Fitzpatrick
I just started this book yesterday, but I’m enjoying it so far, so I thought I would add it to the list. ‘My Life Next Door’ is Contemporary YA Romance, a genre I only read very rarely. But I decided I needed some fluff in my life right now, so I bought ‘My Life Next Door’, again after hearing good things about it online. I am quite enjoying it, it’s a fast read and it makes me feel good. Let’s see if it can keep that up.
